The absolute best moment in writing is sitting down with a story idea fresh in my mind. I’ve done some prep work and I can visualize that opening scene. The whole novel (what I can see of it, anyway) is perfect. It will be my best work yet. This time I will nail it right from the get-go.
And then I type a few paragraphs and the doubts begin. Am I starting in the right spot? Should I add more description? Personally, I rarely have too much. Add a character? Delete a character? Explain how they got here?
By the time I have ten chapters written, I know for sure this first draft is just as big a mess as any others I’ve written (a dozen as of now).
But in a first draft, we need to just pour it all out. Don’t spend too long obsessing about each and every word or you’ll find yourself blocked rather than moving forward. The key is in revision.

I know someone who can help. Yep, it will take some time, commitment, and objectivity. Yep, it will cost you something, but I know few working authors who are better teachers than Holly Lisle. Not only is her How to Think Sideways a PREMIUM writing course, her re-released How to Revise Your Novel is the best indepth course on revision I’ve seen or heard of. I’m an affiliate, so if you decide to purchase either course, I stand to earn a commission. I do, however, believe she is the best teacher with the best courses on the internet.
Holly says, “There are 101 MAJOR problems a first-draft manuscript can have. Most first-draft manuscripts have MOST of them. How many does yours have?”

Want to see her list? Curious about her revision course? Click Here to create a free membership to her novel-writing website. With your membership you’ll receive two things: access to the “101 Worst Mistakes” pdf, and the chance to enter a contest to WIN one (or more!) of Holly’s courses.
Yep, she’s giving stuff away. Lots of stuff, but only until 11:30 a.m. EST on Monday, August 5. The course will still be there afterward at the same price, but the chance to win will have vanished.
(I’ve deleted the prize packages, since they’re over. Still a great course!)
Once again, the legal notice is that I’m Holly’s affiliate and earn a commission from sales I send her way. Once again, I can personally attest to her teaching ability and the value her courses have had for me and my career.
